Akuma's style seems rather close to that of Ryu, doesn't it?

Yeah, perceptive of you to catch the similarity of their styles. Basically, Akuma has been attempting to take over Ryu's body (hence Evil Ryu) and infuse him with the Dark Shoto style.

He almost achieves that in "Street Fighter Alpha: Generations".

Ope! Received an update from a friend who is a BIG 'Street Fighter' nerd. It turned out I was wrong about the Akuma trying to infuse Ryu's body with the dark hado. Apparently, the Evil Ryu was a hypothetical character if the evil ki (once plentiful in Ryu's body) was to win out. Akuma's sole mission is to kill Ryu, thereby becoming the strongest warrior on the face of the planet, though he is still believed to be Ryu's father. Gee, guess I had him all wrong!

Well, only partially wrong, then. In "Street Fighter Alpha" both Ryu and Shun are lured into the ways of the Dark Hadou, causing Ryu to become, at least during those moments of weakest resistance, "Evil Ryu". You can always tell when the "possession" is at hand as it is always heralded by a strong wind (as well as that strange look in Shun's eyes). Of course, even that didn't stop Zangief from trying to crush the boy under his massive boot, LOL! As a flabbergasted friend of Chun Li, looking on, exclaimed, "Aw, COME ON!"

Though in part I think Akuma would likely have had interest in Ryu becoming Evil Ryu, as he would want to have killed him at his strongest. This is all pure speculation though.

And who's to say that Evil Ryu is, in fact, Ryu at his strongest. It may have taken even more strength to have resisted and overcome the Dark Hadou and the unbridled use of power that comes with it such as that which almost killed both Sagat and Zangief. Maybe his real strength is in his restraint of his awesome power.

Maaaaaybe but it seems that, in the way Capcom Japan (and generally all Japanese anime) has portrayed it, the evil ability always lets one tap into heretofore un-utilized powers. At any rate, it is my belief that Akuma would believe that Ryu is at his strongest in PURE EVIL form as he always refers to those who do not kill as insignificant/weak.

Then there's always the fact that Akuma is a sort of characterized interpretation of, what in many cultures would be something akin to, the Devil. The Japanese, however, portray this sort of devil as not necessarily being on hand to tempt people into darkness and evil for the sheer sake of it (as in some Christian customs), but to merely test the convictions and sense of resolve one has in one's own belief systems and personal moral compass (notice how Akuma always eventually knows just when to back off).
Now watch as one of our Japanese fans tells me that I'm full of crap, LOL!
